The Datsun 1200 used a 1.5 inch exhaust system with a very, very, very quiet muffler — the factory Datsun 1200 muffler was so quiet you couldn't hear the engine running at idle. The muffler included a permanently attached tail pipe.
Overview
Exhaust Pipe, Muffler, Tail Pipe
Original mufflers came with integrated tail pipe This rear-most pipe was part of the muffler. Aftermarket replacement mufflers usually had a separate tail pipe to reduce shipping costs.
The muffler should flow at least 2.2 cfm per flywheel HP. For a 69 hp A12, that is 152 cfm, easily achieved with the factory 36mm piping.
Muffler for truck is located in front of the Rear Axle but can be relocated to after the rear axle. Later models have a resonator behind the cab

Muffler for sedan/coupe/wagon is located just in front of the Rear Axle
Coupe & Sedan have the same muffler location, only the bend shape of the tailpipe portion differs a little. This bend allows the pipe to go over the rear axle.
The body of the muffler is suspended by two rubber rings and contributes to quietness of the exhaust system (there are no rattles from the exhaust).

Muffler measurements from my 1200 sedan with factory original muffler:
* 11-5/8" Shell length * 8-1/4" Shell oval width * 3-3/4" Shell oval height * 1.5" front inlet, centered * 1.5" rear outlet, on far left of oval
There is enough room under a sedan that a muffler about 2" longer may fit.
The 1200 GX exhaust system is finished with a small resonator and a muffler later on. The resonator terminates the air column at an exact lenght for optimum power, and also reduces harmonic noise.
A15E EGI dual exhaust (92 hp). This one has been modified to remove the muffler for racing where noise limits do not apply

Clamp
When it's time to fit the muffler to the exhaust pipe, the muffler inlet tube slips over the exhaust pipe coming from the front of the car.

Alternative, you may use a 1.5" muffler u-bolt.
To make sure the exhaust seals, use the factory Datsun muffler seal in the exhaust pipe groove

Muffler Stopper
The rubber muffler stopper prevents the muffler from banging against the floor panel.

Rubber Hangers
These factory parts make your exhaust absolutely quiet. With an original muffler, you couldn't hear the engine idling

Oh, by the way, when you get new rings, they seem too small. But they stretch to fit

The strap (rectangular) rubber hanger uses M8 bolts and washers. It would be easy to make one, with some kind of heat-resistent material: 90x30x12mm with 2 M8 holes on 60mm centers. Or get one off a 280ZX, 810 Maxima, Urvan, Vanette, 240Z or 510/610/710 20640-18000ᴳ

B210 muffler looks identical to the B110 part, but is a little longer at 329mm (1-3/8" longer than B110). There is plenty of room in a B110 sedan for this. this one conveniently has the tailpipe cut off for storage and shipping.

Can Muffler
Hot-dog style mufflers (cannons or "fart cans") are mainly for looks. Having the muffler at the very end of the exhaust makes it louder, and most cans are fiberglass packed tubes ("glass-pack") which are by nature noisy. They are simply a straight-through pipe with baffles in the tube sides.
When fitting a can muffler, it is advised to also fit a large normal muffler under the car.
