The Datsun 1200 has a unibody design made out of high-strength steel. It does not use Body-on-Frame construction. The result is a lighter, stronger and stiffer chassis.

Interchange

The core support rail stay is the same for all models:


62522-H1001 STAY-HOOD CATCH (all models) * sold separately but included with the Core Support assembly.


The other parts differ by the grille used. The core support has brackets for one of these:


Sedan Grille (core-mounted brackets) Plastic round-light grille (narrow spaced brackets) Plastic square-light grille (wide spaced brackets)


The core support rail has either wide or narrow plastic grille upper brackets ... or none at all for early sedan/van/ute.


The apron panel upper edge has plastic grille lower brackets ... or none at all for early sedan/van/ute.


The core support contains headlamp fittings for either sedan, coupe, or square-eye. Sedan/van and early utes Cores (H1000) have brackets to bolt on the grille.

Cowl Panels (Firewall & Dash)

The steering post bracket bolt to the firewall.

The water box is also known as the ventilation plenum. It is where air enters the cabin. The large oval hole in the center is for the heater (or ventilator). The cowl vents are located at the base of the windshield due to aerodynamic reasons.


Normally, rainwater goes in through the top through the Cowl vents and falls onto the topside of the Upper Dash panel. From there it runs out a vent hole on the outside of the panel near the guards (fenders).

Repairing Water Box

Water comes in though the vents behind the bonnet, then runs down to a hole that is there to let it out. If this is rusted, it will instead leak down onto the fenders.

The rear floor is the bottom of the tray (cargo well). The supporting structure (side members and cross members) are also part of the floor.
